Email: heather222a@hotmail.co.uk Correspondence: 3 January 2011 from Heather to Ian Brownlee Hi, I came across your website whilst conducting some research into my family tree so though I'd send through my connection. I am Heather Kneale and my 5 x great grandparents were James Borland (1750, Avondale) and Margaret Brownlie (1755, Avondale). From what I have managed to fine out today Margaret was daughter to Andrew Brownlie (1709, Torfoot), mother unknown, and grand daughter to John Brownlie (ca. 1665, Torfoot) and Janet Hamilton (ca. 1670). I gathered this information from Scotland's People, Ancestry and Familysearch.org. I'd welcome any comments/corrections on my findings and hope that this helps put another piece in the family tree puzzle! All the best, 3 January 2011 from Ian Brownlee to Heather Hi Heather, Thanks for your enquiry. I have an interest in this 'Torfoot' line of Brownlee/ies and have set up a 'Research Group' link <http://www.brownlee.com.au/Pages/Charts/Chart%2010001.html> on my website. At this link I have uploaded everything that I know, as well as research that has been sent to me by other other researchers. Chart 10001 http://www.brownlee.com.au/Pages/Charts/Chart%2010001%20Torfoot.html 1. John Brownlee, third Laird of Torfoot) born cl670 and died 1747. He was married 12 December 1692 to Janet Hamilton born cl670 and died 1757. This John was the third Brownlee to serve as Laird of Torfoot, 1713 to 1747. ** Your Andrew Brownlee born 1709 at Torfoot would most likely fit in here. Regards, Ian Brownlee ian@brownlee.com.au 3 January 2011 from Ian Brownlee to Heather Hi Helen, Here is some more information for you regarding John Brownlie and Janet Hamilton (extracted from <http://www.brownlee.com.au/Pages/Charts/Chart%2010001%20Torfoot.html>): "On 4th January 1693 a sasine was recorded by John Brownlie in Torfoot and Janet Hamilton (his spouse), daughter of Robert Hamilton in Burn, in the eight shilling fourpenny land in Torfoot: “the two just parts yr (sic, each?) of houses, yards and all pertinents and the other third part of yr (sic) thereof to the said Janet Hamilton liferent and conjunct fee reserving the liferent of Thomas Brownlie of Torfoot, father of the said John Brownlie, and Janet Young, his spouse (this would be Thomas’ wife) to John above and Janet Hamilton were spouses on contract matrimonial (marriage settlement) of date 12th day of December 1692, between the said Thomas Brownlie, his son on the one part, and the said Robert Hamilton and Janet, his daughter”. The above appears to confirm that whilst John Brownlie and Janet Hamilton were married on 12th December 1692, the marriage settlement on the land was formalised on 4th January 1693." "In a precept clare constat in favour of John Hamilton in Torfoot, dated 26th of October 1691, the lands of Torfoot were described by the Hamilton principal as “Our Ducal lands of Glengivel (sic)”, sometimes possessed by the desceased John Brownlee (sic), and Thomas Hamilton, and now by the said John Hamilton and Ellen Brownlee, his mother (was this Helen?). From this is appears clear that both John Brownlie and Thomas Hamilton were both dead in 1691, and that John Brownlie and his mother Helen Hamilton were in possession of Torfoot at that time." Regards, Ian Brownlee ian@brownlee.com.au 3 January 2011 from Ian Brownlee to Heather Hi Heather, As a matter of interest I extracted all the Andrew Brownlees (and variant spellings) possible as Margaret's parents from the marriage banns list at <http://www.brownlee.com.au/Pages/Global-Village/Scotland/General-Scotland.html>: 24/5/1729 Andrew Brownlie to Elspeth Samuel in Bathgate, West Lothian (Frame 689 - GROS DATA 662/ 0030 0252) * Strong possibility with daughter named Margaret Andrew born in 1709 was 46 when Margaret born in 1755. Regards, Ian Brownlee ian@brownlee.com.au 3 January 2011 from Heather to Ian Brownlee Hi Ian, Thanks for responding to my message. Very happy for you to put my query up on the website. It's helped greatly on other lines of my tree when you find other people who are willing to contrast and compare data. I agree that I think the marriage to Margaret Ligat is the most likely match. I assumed that there had been at least 2 Andrew Brownlie's living in Avondale at the time of Margaret's birth as a search on Scotland's People returned the following birth/baptism results: 1 08/11/1745 BROUNLIE CATHARINE ANDREW BROUNLIE/ F AVONDALE/LANARK 621/00 0010 0069 2 24/10/1752 BROUNLIE JAMES ANDREW BROUNLIE/ M AVONDALE/LANARK 621/00 0010 0086 3 08/09/1745 BROUNLIE JEAN ANDREW BROUNLIE/ F AVONDALE/LANARK 621/00 0010 0069 4 15/02/1751 BROWNLEE JAMES ANDREW BROWNLEE/ M AVONDALE/LANARK 621/00 0010 0081 5 01/09/1751 BROWNLEE JAMES ANDREW BROWNLEE/ M AVONDALE/LANARK 621/00 0010 0083 6 13/01/1749 BROWNLEE JOHN ANDREW BROWNLEE/ M AVONDALE/LANARK 621/00 0010 0076 7 26/12/1746 BROWNLEE LILIAS ANDREW BROWNLEE/ AVONDALE /LANARK 621/00 0010 0071 8 26/03/1749 BROWNLEE MATTHEW ANDREW BROWNLEE/ AVONDALE/LANARK 621/00 0010 0077 9 18/03/1754 BROWNLIE ISABEL ANDREW BROWNLIE/ F AVONDALE /LANARK 621/00 0010 0090 10 10/12/1755 BROWNLIE MARGARET ANDREW BROWNLIE/ F AVONDALE/LANARK 621/00 0010 0097 11 24/02/1754 BROWNLIE WILLIAM ANDREW BROWNLIE/ M AVONDALE/LANARK 621/00 0010 0090 Margaret is the only child who's name matches any of the marriage records, though it's not easy to decipher who her siblings were. Do let me know if you'd like any further info on my link to the Brownlie's. All the best,
